| Elena Fuentes-Afflick
is Professor, Departments of Pediatrics and Epidemiology
at the University of California, San Francisco.
She graduated from the University of Michigan
Medical School in 1986 and completed her residency
and chief residency in Pediatrics at the University
of California, San Francisco. After a Masters
in Public Health in Epidemiology at the University
of California, Berkeley, she completed a Fellowship
in Health Policy at the Institute for Health Policy
Studies at the University of California, San Francisco.
In 1993, she joined the faculty in Pediatrics
and Epidemiology at the University of California,
San Francisco.
Dr. Fuentes-Afflick’s area of research is
in perinatal outcomes, with a focus on the role
of ethnicity, acculturation and immigration status.
The majority of her work has focused on the ‘epidemiologic
paradox’ of unexpectedly favorable perinatal
outcomes among Latina women, particularly immigrants.
She has served numerous professional organizations,
including the National Institutes of Child Health
and Human Development, the Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality, the American Academy of
Pediatrics, the Ambulatory Pediatric Association
and the Society for Pediatric Research.
