Stuart received his M.D. at Rush Medical College, Chicago, and completed Internal Medicine Training in the VA at UC Irvine. Subsequently, he received his M.P.H. in Health Services from UCLA, and was a Robert Wood Johnson/VA Clinical Scholar at UCSF, completing in 1989. Stuart’s responsibilities include oversight of Advanced Fellowships, which includes the VA’s relationship with the Clinical Scholars Program and a variety of programs allowing advanced preparation for health professionals to become leaders in fields of strategic importance to VA. He is also Director of VA’s Educational Centers of Excellence in Primary Care, a demonstration project advancing health professions education in VA’s patient-centered primary care settings. Stuart represents VA in a variety of physician and other professional development venues, including representing VA to the Board of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. Stuart is field-based, at the Long Beach VA Medical Center and holds the rank of Professor of Clinical Health Sciences, University of California, Irvine.
