Alan Teo (Michigan CSP 11-13) in a recent national study determined that individuals are more likely to develop depression if the quality of their direct relationships was poor, specifically those with unsupportive spouses. The study was published online in PLOS ONE and covered by Health NewsBig News Network and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation


Four recent graduates, Ryan Greysen (Yale CSP 09-11, VA Scholar), Adam Richards (UCLA CSP 08-10), Sidney Coupet (Michigan CSP 11-13), and Aasim Padela (Michigan CSP 08-11) as well as a Yale program site faculty member, Mayur Desai, published an article regarding their survey of US physicians and their experiences in global health. Their study was published in Globalization and Health


In a Annals of Internal Medicine publication Tara Lagu (Penn CSP 05-08) explored how patients in wheelchairs receive less preventive care then those    who are not handicapped. Former National Advisory Committee member, Lisa Iezzonipublished an editorial commenting on the study. The study was also covered in the New York Times.


Alumni Ryan Greysen (Yale CSP 09-11, VA Scholar) and Marjorie Rosenthal (Yale CSP 03-05), as well as current Yale program site Deputy Director Georgina Lucas, published an article in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved on improving quality of discharge care for the homeless. 


As lead author in a recent study published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, Kelly Doran (Yale CSP 11-13, VA Scholar), discovered that extreme life altering circumstances affect emergency room visits more than traditional access to care issues. A description of her research also appears on the RWJF homepage


Recent alum, Lenard Lesser (UCLA CSP 09-12), published his research on how food advertising for fast food restaurants such as McDonald's and Subways effected young peoples food choices in the Journal of Adolescent Health. His study was also covered on the RWJF homepage and Southern California Public Radio (89.3, KPCC). 


Tammy Chang (Michigan CSP 11-13), along with alums Caroline Richardson (Michigan CSP 99-01) and Matt Davis (Chicago CSP 98-00), examined whether teen pregnancy contributes to obesity later in life. Their study, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was reported by HealthDay News


Matthew Davis (Chicago CSP 98-00)
and Stephen Patrick (Michigan CSP 10-12) published in a special supplement to the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics  a study trying to determine why some hospitals are better able to help newborns survive then others. Read more about their work on the RWJF site.


Gordon Sun (Michigan CSP 11-13, VA Scholar) along with  Katherine Auger (Michigan CSP '11-13), Oluseyi Aliu (Michigan CSP '11-13, VA Scholar), Stephen Patrick (Michigan CSP '10-12), and Matthew Davis (Michigan Program Co-Director, Chicago CSP '98-00) published an article on Posttonsillectomy hemorrhage in children with von Willebrand disease or hemophilia in the JAMA Otolaryngology Head Neck Surgery.


Jonathan Bergman (UCLA CSP 11-13, VA Scholar) found in a new study, published in JAMA Surgery, that patients who are able to tell their doctors about what they want for end of life care experience less discomfort and use fewer healthcare dollars. His research was also covered in the Los Angeles Times.


In a recent Annals of Internal Medicine, Jeffrey Kullgren (Penn CSP 09-11, VA Scholar) and colleagues, determined group-competitive weight loss strategies, where participants compete for monetary awards as a group, results in patients losing more weight than similar programs where individual awards are given out.

Lenard Lesser (UCLA CSP 09-12), in a recent UCLA Department of Family Medicine study, found outdoor food advertisement has a linkage to increased likelihood of obesity. A brief article discussing the research was published by Bio-Medicine and the full version can be found at BMC Public Health.


Current scholars, Kori Sauser (Michigan CSP 12-14) and Katherine Vickery (Michigan CSP 12-14), as well as alumni Matthew M. Davis (Chicago CSP 98-00 and Co-Director Michigan CSP), in a recent Journal of American Medicine Association article, provide commentary and findings on a 1986 law mandating universal access to care and the newest legislation pertaining to this, the Affordable Care Act of 2010.


Editorial Pieces

Mahshid Abir (Michigan CSP 09-11, VA Scholar) published an op-ed piece on CNN's website regarding Moore, Oklahoma's difficult road to psychological recovery after such a devastating natural disaster. 


Current Penn and VA scholar Lisa Rosenbaum (12-14) has an article in New England Journal of Medicine on overcoming the blind spots in health care reform. 


Lenny Lesser (UCLA CSP 09-12) and Sean Lucan (Penn CSP 07-09) discuss the potentially ethical message a hospital conveys based on the cafeteria/food options it provides it patients, employees, and visitors  in the American Medical Association’s Journal of Ethics


Current scholars Ashok Reddy (Penn CSP 12-14, VA Scholar) and Benjamin Roman (Penn CSP 12-14) were featured in the RWJF Human Capital Blog regarding their recent essays that were published in the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics’ eMagazine. Dr. Reddy discusses the need to spend money on disease prevention in order to save money in the long-term, while Dr. Roman looks at patient centered medicine to improve health care reform.


Director of the Yale program site, Harlan Krumholz, provides three important things everyone needs to know about it about gut bacteria increasing risk of heart disease in a Forbes Magazine online article.

Promotions

Dr. Katrina Armstrong, co-director of the Clinical Scholars program and a professor of medicine and obstetrics and gynecology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, has been named chair of the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is the first woman to hold the prestigious position. She will join the hospital on April 15 and succeeds Dr. Dennis Ausiello. http://tinyurl.com/akyokdj

Eight Clinical Scholar alums were chosen as Modern Healthcare's "50 Most Influential Physician Executives in Healthcare:" Kelvin Baggett (John Hopkins CSP 03-05), Mark Chassin (UCLA CSP 76-78), Patrick Conway (Penn CSP 05-07), Elliott Fisher (Washington CSP 83-85), Gary Gottlieb (Penn CSP 83-85), Risa Lavizzo-Mourey (Penn CSP 83-86), Reed Tuckson (Penn CSP 81-83), and Robert Wachter (UCSF CSP 88-90). RWJF's Human Capital Blog posted an announcement regarding the award.  



Arjun Venkatesh (Yale CSP 12-14) was awarded the 2013 Alice S. Hersh Scholarship, to attend the AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting, as well as presenting the following papers at the conference: “Variation in US Hospital Emergency Department Admission Rates by Clinical Condition, 2009” and “Use of Observation Care for ED Patients with Chest Pain: A Statewide Analysis of Society of Chest Pain Centers Metrics in Georgia, 2009.”


Margaret Gourlay (UNC CSP 02-04) won the Top 10 Clinical Research Achievement Award from the Clinical Research Forum for her study on bone density screening for older women. Read more about Dr. Gourlay's great achievement and view an interview on UNC's Health Care website


Current scholar Jason Lott (Yale CSP 12-14, VA Scholar) has been selected, along with 8 others, for the Cancer Research Network (CRN) Scholars Program.


Michigan Clinical Scholar site director and alumnus, Rodney Hayward (UCLA CSP 86-88), recently received the 2013 SGIM John M. Eisenberg Award for Career Achievement in Research.


Penn’s Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics sponsored a number of Clinical Scholars (Anjali Gopalan, Ashok Reddy, Lisa Rosenbaum– Penn CSP 12-14 & VA Scholar and Benjamin Roman - Penn CSP 12-14) to attend AcademyHealth’s National Health Policy Conference. Commissions/Board Service

At the inaugural meeting of the new Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development's branch on critical care and trauma at the National Institute for Health four of the 29 non federal participants at the meeting are former Clinical Scholars: Carole Jenny (Penn CSP 74-76), John Leventhal (Yale CSP 76-78), Joanne Wood (Penn CSP 07-10) and Des Runyan (UNC CSP 79-81). Rhonda J. Mattox (UCLA CSP 08-11) has been selected as the 2013 American Psychiatry Association Jeanne Spurlock Congressional Fellow. Mattox is the medical director of United Family Services. She completed a psychiatry residency at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences in Little Rock and was a National Institute of Mental Health Services Research Fellow. Dr. Mattox has a particular interest in the impact of media violence on children and the accurate portrayal of mental health in media.


Current scholar Ilse Wiechers (Yale CSP 12-14) was recently named Chair of the Board of Trustees for the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP) Political Action Committee (PAC).


Natasha Ray, Yale Clinical Scholars program community partner and member of the community steering committee, has been asked to participate in the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences’ review of their Clinical and Translational Science Awards Program (CTSA) and how it relates to community engagement.


Three leadership positions in the national HMO Research Network are all currently held by former University of Washington Clinical Scholars. Eric Larson (CSP 75-77) is immediate past-chair of the Governing Board, John Steiner (CSP 85-87) is the current Governing Board Chair (2013-14), and Greg Simon (CSP 88-90) is the current head of their Asset Stewardship Committee.

Erin Krebs (UNC CSP 04-06), women’s health medical director at the Minneapolis VA, was recently awarded a grant to improve women’s quality and access to care in the VA. Dr. Krebs’ efforts are detailed in the Star Tribune.

Other

Lisa Rosenbaum (Penn CSP 12-14, VA Scholar) was part of a study that looked at people who fell ill during a flight and if there was a doctor present. Dr Rosenbaum helped a pregnant women on a flight in 2007 and had the pilot make an emergency landing. To read more about the study read the Associated Press' article

In the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, directed by alum and Michigan program site Co-Director Matthew Davis (Chicago CSP 98-00), they found parents did not know enough about their children taking so-called "study" drugs which typically are prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The study's findings are detailed in an article on RedOrbit.com


University of Washington Public Health Associate Dean, Fred Connell (Washington CSP 76-78), will retire after 35 years at the University. The Daily, University of Washington's newspaper, published a story on his retirement.


Kavita K. Patel (UCLA CSP 03-05)
, Fellow and Managing Director of the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at the Brookings Institution testified before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee on Medicare Physicians Payments. Watch or read her testimony here


Nathaniel DeNicola (Penn CSP 11-13, VA Scholar), in a recent study presented at the annual clinical meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, discovered "nearly two-thirds of all U.S. hospitals that handle non-emergency births have instituted policies to eliminate non-medically indicated deliveries prior to 39 weeks’ gestation" according to the article on Nurse.com


In the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, directed by alum and Michigan program site Co-Director Matthew Davis (Chicago CSP 98-00), they found that most parents give cold medicine to young children when they should not.  ABC NewsDetroit News and the Wall Street Journal is reporting the survey results.  


Alum Jeremiah Schuur (Yale CSP 05-07, VA Scholar) shares his experiences with providing trauma care for the victims of the April 15th Boston Marathon bombing on the RWJF website

Current students Anita Vashi (Yale CSP 11-13, VA Scholar) and Nurit Harari (Yale CSP 11-13) describe their opinions on using disaster preparedness strategies in communities where urban violence, specifically gun violence, is prevalent in order to "build resilience" in a recent op-ed piece in The CT Mirror


Stephen Becker (UCSF CSP 79-80) gave the keynote address at the International Pharmacotherapy Education and Research Initiative’s (IPERI) UB Global HIV Research Day in March. Dr. Becker is deputy director of HIV in the Global Health Department of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.


The RWJF Human Capital blog interviewed Bonnie Zima (UCLA CSP 89-91) about her work trying to improve mental health care for children.


The Newton Bee, reports that alumni Jill Barron (Yale CSP 07-09) is helping Newton assess it response to post-traumatic stress. Dr. Barron was also involved in helping firefighters, and others, recover after the events of 9/11.


Anjali Gopalan (Penn CSP 12-14, VA Scholar) wrote an article on the RWJF Human Capital Blog discussing the pros and cons of the health care management software OpenNotes. This essay was part of a series published by Penn’s Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics.


Mitesh Patel (Penn CSP 12-14, VA Scholar) a current scholar and co-founder of Docphin, an electronic search service that provides tailored information and research to physicians, was interviewed by Entrepreneur.com about the effect Obamacare has had on the tech industry.


Gordon Sun (Michigan CSP 11-13, VA Scholar), Reshma Jagsi (RWJF Physician Faculty Scholar '09-12) and Jeffrey D. Steinberg wrote a letter to the editor on funding for biomedical research in JAMA.


Alum, and now Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services, Nicole Lurie (UCLA CSP 82-84) issued a statement on the recently signed into law Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness Reauthorization Act (2013).
