CSP Alumni & Recruitment Receptions

This past open application period, the NPO sponsored two alumni & recruitment receptions on a pilot basis, one in Chicago and one in Boston.  The receptions successfully brought alumni together to network and engaged prospective medical residents and medical students.  We asked alumni to bring one or more prospective applicants.  Attendees briefly talked about their research interests.  The receptions gave alumni the chance to reconnect and yielded applicants and several acceptances into the 2010-2012 cohort.  As such, we will be holding two receptions during the upcoming open application period in January 2010:

  • Seattle, University of Washington - 1/14/2010 (Location TBD)
  • New York City, Mount Sinai School of Medicine - 1/21/2010 (Location TBD)

Peter Ubel (Co-Director Michigan CSP) co-authors study examing the polarizing effect of news media messages about the social determinants of health

Framing health problems in terms of the social determinants of health aims to shift policy attention to nonmedical strategies to improve population health, yet little is known about how the public responds to these messages. We conducted an experiment to test the effect of a news article describing the social determinants of type 2 diabetes on the public’s support for diabetes prevention strategies. We found that exposure to the social determinants message led to a divergence between Republicans’ and Democrats’ opinions, relative to their opinions after viewing an article with no message about the causes of diabetes. These results signify that increasing public awareness of the social determinants of health may not uniformly increase public support for policy action.

UCLA Co-Director Ken Wells and community leader Loretta Jones co-author JAMA commentary on CBPR

In many underserved communities, "research" is a loaded word that sets expectations of being examined or exploitedThis is more likely when data are published but not otherwise shared, such as in a community forum. Research, whether it intends to or not, may disadvantage groups by highlighting problems rather than assets. Research can thus become a symbol of distance between community reality and the "ivory tower," where few mechanisms exist to facilitate community access to knowledge. Academics may view pursuit of knowledge as paramount and in entering research partnerships take such perspectives personally rather than as an expected subject of ongoing discussion.

UCLA Clinical Scholars program Co-Director Dr. Robert Brook, MD, ScD writes commentary on health care quality, transparency and the US government in the Journal of the American Medical Association

JAMA. 2009;301(13):1377-1378.

Some solutions for producing a better health care system in the United States and abroad call for paying clinicians more for better performance. For this solution to work, valid and reliable measures of performance must be available. Although the quality-of-care field has matured and many such measures have been produced, a need for better methods and indicators by which performance can be assessed remains.

In 2001, the government of California, responding to calls to improve quality of care, decided to produce routinely available statewide reports on mortality following isolated coronary artery bypass surgery, by hospital and physician.1 The outcome-reporting program is housed in the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. I was asked to chair the committee that oversees the production of these reports, the purpose of which is to increase public and professional knowledge about this procedure.

Committee members include health services researchers, . . .
