National Program Office Sponsors Clinical Scholars Receptions
The Clinical Scholars national program office is sponsoring Clinical Scholars receptions at several upcoming medical meetings. Interested resident physicians are invited to meet with current and former scholars, program faculty, and national advisory committee members in attendance.

Penn Scholars Noted for Block Captain Project in Philadelphia
When seven young doctors working with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation finished examining the epidemic of violence in West and Southwest Philadelphia in the fall, they prescribed an old-fashioned remedy: Block captains.

Arkansas Surgeon General Dr. Joe Thompson Receives 2008 Health Care Quality Award
Arkansas Surgeon General Dr. Joe Thompson (UNC CSP 1993-1995) received the 2008 Health Care Quality Award from the National Committee for Quality Assurance. The 2008 Health Quality Award recognizes the achievements of individuals and organizations who highlight the need for and drive health care quality improvement.

Two Yale Alumni and Yale Program Director Cited in News for Recent JAMA Article
Former scholars, Dr. Joseph S. Ross (Yale 2004-2006) Dr. Kevin P. Hill (Yale 2005-2007), and current Yale program director Dr. Harlan M. Krumholz were cited in The Washington Post and New York Times for their recent JAMA article on guest authorship and ghostwriting, entitled Guest Authorship and Ghostwriting in Publications Related to Rofecoxib - A Case Study of Industry Documents From Rofecoxib Litigation.

Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Mark 35 Years of Health Services Research

On the road to a rewarding career after his residency, Ben Springgate, MD, MPH, wanted to find the intersection of health care, health policy, and health disparities. Without a traditional map to show the way, Springgate's compass pointed to the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine (UCLA), which serves as one of four academic training sites for the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Clinical Scholars Program.

Call For Community-based Participatory Research (CBPR) Papers
RWJF Clinical Scholars and alumni/ae are invited to submit research papers for a special issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. This solicitation requests full manuscripts and brief reports on original research that demonstrates how CBPR can contribute to both scholarship and directly impact communities.

Clinical Scholars' Matthew O'Brien and Giridhar Mallya Serve South Philadelphia's Latino Community
Dr. Matthew O'Brien, director of community research for the the Spanish-friendly free clinic who, like Dr. Giridhar Mallya (his classmate at Brown medical school) is a fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program, thinks the clinic can be a new model for health-care delivery because it goes beyond simple acute care and tries to teach patients how to manage chronic conditions, the fastest-growing problem in medicine.

Donald F. Schwarz, M.D., M.P.H. M.B.A., vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics at The
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, deputy physician-in-chief at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and chief, Craig-Dalsimer Division of Adolescent Medicine at Children's Hospital was named today Deputy Mayor of Health and Opportunity and Health Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia.

Yale Program Director Harlan M. Krumholz, M.D., is elected to Institute of Medicine

Dr. Harlan M. Krumholz, Director of the Yale RWJ Clinical Scholars Program has been elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences. Members are elected to the IOM in recognition of their major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health. Election is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health.

UCLA Co-Director Robert Brook, M.D., receives David E. Rogers Award

Dr. Robert Brook, Director of the UCLA RWJ Clinical Scholars program received the prestigious David E. Rogers Award. The Association of American Medical Colleges and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation jointly sponsor the award.

UCLA Co-Director Robert Brook, M.D., receives Institute of Medicine's 2005 Gustav O. Lienhard Award

Robert Brook, M.D., Co-Director of the UCLA Clinical Scholars, has received the Institute of Medicine's 2005 Gustav O. Lienhard Award for the advancement for personal health care services in the United States. The award was presented at the 2005 IOM annual meeting.

Michigan Associate Director Rodney Hayward receives 2005 Under Secretary's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Health Services Research

Rodney Hayward, M.D., Associate Director of the University of Michigan Clinical Scholars, is the recipient of the 2005 Under Secretary’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Health Services Research. The award was presented during the 2005 VA Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) national meeting.

Clinical Scholars program alumna Gretchen Berland named a MacArthur Fellow

Gretchen Berland, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine, has been named a MacArthur Fellow, by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for her work in medicine and documentary film.
