Penn Associate Director Schwarz Named Philadelphia's Deputy Mayor of Health and Opportunity and Health Commissioner

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Donald F. Schwarz, M.D., M.P.H. M.B.A., vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics at The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, deputy physician-in-chief at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and chief, Craig-Dalsimer Division of Adolescent Medicine at Children's Hospital was named today Deputy Mayor of Health and Opportunity and Health Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia.

Altschuler, M.D., president and chief executive officer at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "His expertise and commitment to public health will be beneficial in this important position."

In these roles, Dr. Schwarz will lead a collaborative effort with the Commissioner of the Department of Human Services and the Director of Community Behavioral Health to coordinate the development policy and allocation of resources affecting the delivery of health and social services.

Dr. Schwarz, a 1977 graduate of Brown University, received his M.D. and M.P.H. degrees from Johns Hopkins University in 1982. He completed his residency training in Pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1985. Dr. Schwarz was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 1985 to 1987, and he received an MBA from The Wharton School in 1987. He joined Children's Hospital as a fellow in 1987.

A pioneer in the field of adolescent medicine, he is recognized nationally and internationally in this field. Dr. Schwarz has served on numerous review committees for child health at the National Institutes of Health, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and other funding organizations.

He has made extraordinary contributions to the field of adolescent medicine, adolescent health, community relations for youth, and community-level interventions. Dr. Schwarz has received both public and private funding for work that has examined the issues of injury and its prevention in urban minority communities, public policy approaches to adolescent violence, and physician- and nurse-practice-based interventions to improve outcomes for adolescent mothers.

Over the past 20 years, Dr. Schwarz has served on numerous committees serving the City of Philadelphia, including the Board of Directors for Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth (serving as president for four years), the Mayor's Philadelphia Children's Network Advisory Board, the School District of Philadelphia Advisory Committees for Children's Issues, the Child Health Advisory Board, and the PULSE Advisory Board of the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He has served as Advisor to the Mayor's Cabinet for Children and the Youth Violence Task Force. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Healthier Babies, Healthier Mothers Program, a public and private collaboration to improve birth outcomes in the Philadelphia area, and was also a member of the Child Welfare Advisory Board for the City of Philadelphia.
