CSP Alumni Terrence Steyer, M.D., elected president-elect of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM)

Terrence E. Steyer, M.D. was recently elected president-elect of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) at the organization's Annual Meeting in Baltimore , Maryland .

Founded in 1967, STFM members include more than 5,000 teachers of family medicine. The Society’s core purpose is to advance family medicine to improve health through a community of teachers and scholars. It hosts several educational conferences each year and is the publisher of Family Medicine, the leading educational journal for family medicine educators.

Dr. Steyer is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate (1990) of Allegheny College in Meadville , PA and a 1994 graduate of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland , Ohio . Immediately upon medical school graduation, he served a one-year term as National President of the American Medical Student Association. During his term, Dr. Steyer actively worked on issues of health care reform, improving medical education and helping medical students to gain a better understanding of health care disparities. He then completed his family medicine residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem , NC and his fellowship as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor . Currently, he is an associate professor of family medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston . Dr. Steyer is an active clinician – educator whose research efforts focus on leadership development and medical education.
Dr. Steyer will become President in May 2009, and will also serve a three-year term on the Council of Academic Family Medicine, the umbrella organization for all of academic family medicine.
