NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series

The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD)

scheduled for August 13, 2009. The theme for the August seminar series is
community-based participatory research (CBPR). For those of you unable to attend in person at NIH, the videocast of session will be available within a few days after the seminar. For more information visit the NCMHD website at www.ncmhd.nih.gov or call 301-402-1366.

Topic: Community-Based Participatory Research --A Partnership Approach to
Address Health Disparities

Recognizing the complex set of determinants of health status, and the
disproportionate burden of disease experienced within low income communities
and communities of color, there have been increasing calls for more
participatory approaches to research and practice to understand and address
these health disparities. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is
one such approach to knowledge generation, intervention research, policy
change, and building bridges across diverse communities. CBPR emphasizes the
equitable involvement of community members, practitioners and researchers in
all aspects of the research process. The purpose of this presentation is to
provide a definition of CBPR, discuss the rationale for its use to
understand and address health disparities, describe the key principles of
CBPR and the application of this approach, and examine the goals and
accomplishments of one CBPR partnership, the Detroit Community-Academic
Urban Research Center (URC).
