Sustained Exposure to the Clinical Scholars Program Can Make One Wildly Optimistic

Desmond RunyanWhen I was finishing my time as a Clinical Scholar at the University of North Carolina I needed to extend my time at UNC by at least one more year before going on the national job market as my wife had another year of her doctoral program in public health.  I was encouraged by my pediatric mentor to look at a job in what was then called the Department of Social and Administrative Medicine at UNC. They were looking for a new faculty member to direct the Clinical Epidemiology course that had been successfully designed and nurtured by Drs. Suzanne and Robert Fletcher (both JHU ’73 alums). However, I was warned that the chair didn’t think much of Clinical Scholars and probably wouldn’t be interested in having a pediatrician in this position. He was overheard referring to the Clinical Scholars as a “coffee klatch.” Despite whatever misgivings he had, he offered me the position.  I think it worked out well.

The New RWJF Clinical Scholars Program Announces First Cohort of Fellows
The first cohort of Clinical Scholars includes 30 clinically active health care providers who collaborate in teams with fellow clinicians from a wide range of disciplines—including nursing, audiology, pharmacy, and social work. Over the next three years, the teams will take on complex problems in their communities, addressing the social factors that underlie health from their perspectives as both health care providers and members of the community.
Applications for the next cohort will open in January 2017. Clinical Scholars is a national leadership program for clinically active health care providers working to advance a Culture of Health in community, clinic, or academic settings. Licensed providers are invited to attend an informational webinar on the next call for applications on Thursday, October 13, 2016 from 3-4:30 EST. Interested candidates can RSVP here. For additional information please visit www.clinical-scholars.org
