From the Director: The Public Health Workforce and the Clinical Scholars Program

Desmond RunyanThis week we heard that one of our more recent Scholar alums Rebekah Gee (Penn 2009) has been appointed to the position of Secretary for the Louisiana Department of Health and Human Services (by the way, she is looking for an alum interested in the position of Medicaid Medical Director for Louisiana). Looking beyond the remarkable collection of alumni talent that has populated the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other offices of the Department of Health and Human Services (more than 30 Scholars across HRSA, NIH, HHS, and CDC), the Clinical Scholars program has had a remarkable record for alumni being appointed to leadership positions in state and city public health departments and schools of public health. Ed Elhinger (UNC 1979) is the current State Health Commissioner for Minnesota. Mary Bassett (UW 1985) is the current Health Commissioner for the City of New York. Mitch Katz (UCSF 1991) is the Director of Health Services for the County of Los Angeles. Two Scholars who have completed terms as state health director are David Gifford (UCLA 1994) in Rhode Island and Nirav Shah (UCLA 2003) in New York. Judy Zerzan (UW 2006) is the state Chief Medical Officer in Colorado. Matt Davis (Chicago 2000) was the State Medical Officer for Michigan. Mehul Dalal (Yale 2009) serves as the Chronic Disease Director of the Connecticut Health Department. Alton Hart (UW 1999) serves as the Health director for Crater Health District in Virginia. Sarah Kinsman (Penn 1995) is director of Maternal and Child Health for Philadelphia.

2016 Final Annual Meeting – Save the Date

2016 Clinical Scholars Annual MeetingThe final annual meeting will be November 14-17, 2016 at the Emory Conference Center Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. There will be an alumni call for abstracts released early May 2016 with a deadline at the end of May. Rather than individual alumni presentations it is likely that alumni will be invited to speak on panels around different innovations in health and health care resulting from the work of alumni/scholars. We look forward to having Michigan CSP Co-director Michele Heisler (MICH CSP 00-02) as the meeting planning chair. Each year at the annual meeting we celebrate the lifetime achievement of an alumnus/a via the Annie Lea Shuster invited talk. Is there an alumnus or alumna whom you have looked up to for inspiration and guidance? If so, please let us know (ksieben@med.unc.edu).
